Mad Magic is a beautifully dark and rich Young Adult fantasy from Nicole Conway, bestselling author of the Dragonrider Chronicles.

Josie Barton is a high school student living in terror. Invisible creatures torment her everywhere she goes, constantly getting her into trouble at school, and even haunting her apartment. But just when Josie thinks things couldn’t get any worse... she meets the guy from across the hall.

Zeph Clemmont is a changeling with enemies in all the worst places, fighting to undo a curse that threatens to end his life. Survival means he will have to swallow his pride and trust Josie with all his darkest secrets.

With the help of a gun-slinging shaman and the enigmatic Prince of Nightmares, Zeph and Josie are only a heartbeat away from defeating one of the most diabolical faerie villains their world has ever known.

1) What was it like transitioning from writing about dragons to writing about faeries?
It’s probably very telling to my short, utterly random attention span, but swapping over from dragons to fae wasn’t that hard for me. The challenge was more on making sure I played up the parts that put this book in the YA category once it was clear that was where it needed to be. I normally write for a younger audience, so I was afraid to break some of the usual “rules” I had gotten comfortable with when it came to violence, action, romance, etc.

2) How did this story come to you?
Well, it began with a character – as most of my stories do. Zeph came first, and from that his story evolved and grew, incorporating new people and places until Mad Magic was born. Eldrick was actually the last to be developed because I originally intended for him to be a villain. He had other plans, though!

3) What’s some writing advice that you’ve always kept with you?
The best advice I’ve ever gotten actually came from the Queen of Vampires herself, Anne Rice. I got to interview her for a project in college and I asked her this same question. She told me “always be writing something,” which is something that sort of surprised me. I’d always been working on story after story, so I didn’t realize that was a problem for other upstarting authors. But it’s wonderful advice. Publishers and agents don’t just want the golden egg – they want the goose. So finish one book and start the next. Write something every day. You never know which story will be your golden egg!

4) What is your writing process?
Chaos, mostly. It usually takes me a month to write a book, if life allows. I have a toddler so that can get derailed quickly. But if I’m left undisturbed, I turn out around 5-7k words a day. I usually write up full character profiles, draw maps, and have a solid world built before I begin. Sometimes I plot, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I plot and then immediately ditch that plot when the story hits a stride. It’s always different from story to story.

5) What’s your favourite winter activity?
Sleeping? Hah! Actually, I love cooking. Winter means lots of family get togethers and opportunities to cook good food. I express my love via food hugs!
