The Scionless House
Twelve Houses. Twelve vampire lines. We ruled from the shadows, and manipulated the world, and when humans came too close to destruction, we intervened.
Every House has a Scion. A fragile, easily broken human that stood shoulder to shoulder with the house Princes and Princesses.
Except for ours. The Ravens, House Cantelie.
We've been without a Scion for almost fifteen years.
But that will change...and her life will be mine to protect.

The Blood Scion
I was just a reporter, trying to stay ahead of my student loans. I knew the rules, and I followed them.
I thought I knew how the world worked—humans lived their petty little lives in the safety of the sun. We loved and fought and—when the sun sank—we scurried behind our walls and lived in fear. That is when the monsters came out to play.
And even in the safety of the sun, we knew who ruled us.
The Houses. And their Scions.
Everyone knows the great Houses and their Scions—they are feared and loved and hated and envied. They are the gods who walk the shadows and rule all of our lives. They are salvation and death.
And somehow, I am one of them.
The Scionless House:
This prequel was awesome! We got a backstory, a look at a few of the characters we’ll see in the series, AND find out why this series even exists. However, it’s more of a short story versus a novella, as it was only 50 pages long. I instantly fell in love with both Octavian and Sulla. They both had their ghosts that led them to where they were, and I just loved how snarky they were. After reading this, I immediately needed to go into the first book The Blood Scion.

The Blood Scion:
First thoughts of reading first book was “Who is this girl and is her need for the story?” We’re immersed in this girl who’s just trying to stay ahead in life. Second thought was “Where’s Octavian?!”

After I had those thoughts, I went back to what happened in the novella and was instantly glad I read it. Never in a series has it been crucial to read the prequel, but in order to fully understand this series, it’s a must! There’s no reiterating of why everything is happening. Good thing the prequel is free!

Farley is your average human, who despises vampires and their kin since she was a teen. So how does Farley react when 2 vampires appear before her? Well, not that well, to say the least. She runs off to her brother, Winston, who’s been her protector ever since vampires took their parents.  Winston is a lawyer who specializes, in vampire law. Shocking, not shocking. Soon, Farley and her brother discover their true roles as to why the two vampire princes show up.

In books, I find it easier and the will to want to read more when characters have chemistry, and damn to Octavian and Farley have chemistry. There’s an underlying desire and need that both of them have for each other. However strong-willed Farley doesn’t cross that line easily. Octavian admires how she’s strong and stands up for herself. The story is told from alternating views from both of them, which I loved, as I’m a sucker for when it’s from a guy’s perspective.

The pages that fall in between the front and back of this book are full of action, desire and bloodthirst. Nazerea knows how to put a spin on a creature that can be perceived as a “been there, done that” idea. Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to watch Underworld to witness more vampire hotness.
