Blood Will Spill, Hearts Will Break: With a fierce rivalry raging between two warring families, falling in love is the deadliest thing Sophie could do. An epic debut set outside modern-day Chicago.

For Sophie, it starts as just another slow, hot summer in Cedar Hill. Then a new family moves into the long-abandoned mansion across the street: the Falcone family, with its five mysterious brothers. Unable to resist bad boy Nicoli, Sophie finds herself falling for him--and into his world. But just as the dark secrets of the Falcones begin to come to light, the skeletons of her own family, the Gracewells, rise to the surface, too. And soon Sophie is torn between the desires of two warring dynasties: the one she was born into and the one she's now in love with. But she'll have to choose between passion and honor. And when she does, blood will spill and hearts will break. Because in this twisted underworld, loyalty can mean the difference between life and death.

"Fan-freaking-tastic…I honestly can’t say enough good things about it! I would read anything Cat Doyle writes after flying through Vendetta!!" -Victoria Scott

How did this book idea come to you?

I first had the idea for Vendetta when I was falling asleep one night (very convenient, I know!) I was drifting off when an image popped into my head. It was of five boys, doused in shadow, standing side-by-side in front of an old crumbling mansion. I was looking at them through the eyes of someone else – a girl, I realized, and she was wondering who they were and where they came from. I’ve always wanted to write a story that married my love of mafia movies like the Godfather and Goodfellas with my love of all things Disney and romance, and I knew these were the characters for the job. I got up straight away (even though it was like 2am) and started writing Vendetta that night.

What was the first thing your characters said to you when you started writing Vendetta?

I think Sophie’s first words were some variation on “I’m so bored.” And she was. I could see her so clearly, drumming her fingernails on the diner counter-top and staring off into the distance. Straightaway, I felt like I knew her completely. She was living this stagnant life in a town where almost everyone looked down on her. She was crying out for adventure or love, or both, anything to shake up the monotony of her routine. Millie didn’t say much; she was just this bright, twirling star in the periphery of Sophie’s vision. She was there to be a good friend, a so-so influence, and a source of happiness for Sophie. Their friendship was the most important thing to her. With Nic, I knew he was excited. He was itching to get to work and do what he came to do. He wasn’t focused on romance or girls when I first started writing him. Instead he was saying “I’m ready.” He was looking at the bigger picture, at his family’s legacy. And Luca? He was just plain frustrated. He was frustrated about who he had to be and what he had to do. Frustrated that he was now stuck in a one-horse town and angry at all the things he couldn’t change. I guess he was saying, “Get me the hell out of here now.” And I was saying “Nope.” ;)

I know you wrote the story based in Chicago because that’s where your mom grew up. Why did you feel that was a significant thing to do?

For the kind of story I wanted to write – one based in the criminal underworld – I knew it would have to be somewhere authentic, and if possible, somewhere that already had a history with the criminal underworld. My mother used to take me back to visit Chicago when I was growing up. I’ve always had a great fondness for the city, and being an enthusiast of crime movies and documentaries, I knew a bit about its history with organized crime too. The Chicago Outfit is a syndicate that dates back to the 1910s and began a period of crime marked by illegal distribution of banned substances as well as gang wars and family rivalries. The city was also famously home to Al Capone, one of the most notorious American mafia figures in history. Between the pre-existing historical connection and my own personal connection, it just seemed like a good fit.

There are five Falcone brothers, can you give a 1 word description for each of them? And which one would you like to date?

Ooooh, excellent question! So tough!

Nic: Passionate
Luca: Misunderstood
Valentino: Shrewd
Dom: Flirtatious
Gino: Unusual

I’d probably date Luca.

Is there any particular song that stands out when you think of the book?

Yes! Take Me to Church by Hozier. It’s haunting, romantic, atmospheric and just plain brilliant.
