Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find "her" demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

Every once in a while there comes a book about witches that takes places in a modern setting and you're curious as to how it'll work. Well this modern witch tale works perfectly.

Knowing one of your favorite authors love a book, can intrigue someone to pick it up sooner. But I will say that despite the rave Salt got from Jennifer Armentrout, I picked this one up on my own before I read her blurb.

First off, let me say RIP Penelope and Connie's parents. This aspect of the book had a Harry Potter feeling to it. Speaking of Potter, it is brought up a few times. Which I thought was a cute touch to the story.

In a day where demons hide among the living and witches are trained to destroy them, we have Penelope who is powerless in this battle. I had mixed feelings at first about her. At first she would do anything to get her powers back, but then as the story goes on, you discover with her that there is more than just killing a demon to get her powers back.

I felt blind while reading this. In the way that just when you think something good is about to happen, all the doors to more answers are closed. And I quite enjoyed that about this book.

The tests that Pen goes through had me on edge. I was worried that she would be busted for not having her own magic. It made me grateful for the kinds of tests I had to write while in school.

Then we meet the handsome Carter. His secret didn't work on me. You can kind of pick up hints to what he's up to, but it's up to you to read on and decide on if you're right. The chemistry between him and Pen was cute. I felt their connection was natural and not forced because of their situation.

If you love your witches and mystery, then you'd best not to miss this upcoming release. Oh, and I forgot to mention that you also get to meet one awesome best friend and one ideal little sister, I know I wish I had one like Connie at times.

About the Author
Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly and talking to imaginary friends. When she grew up, she finally flew away (in an airplane) and started traveling the world. She hasn’t stopped yet, but someday she may decide to settle in one place. Her real life friends would definitely like that; they would probably also like if she stopped talking to her characters out loud.

SALT comes out in January 2014, and then it's sequel. In October 2014, FOLLOW ME THROUGH DARKNESS (book one of the BOUNDLESS Trilogy) comes out. She's got a busy few years!
